Choosing between Full Container Load (FCL) and Less than Container Load (LCL) is one of the first decisions any importer or exporter faces. FCL gives your cargo an entire container to itself — sealed at origin and opened only at destination — making it the faster, more cost-effective option once your shipment exceeds roughly 15 CBM. LCL, on the other hand, lets you share container space with other shippers and pay only for the volume you use, which makes it ideal for smaller shipments, first-time exporters, or businesses testing a new market without committing to a full container.
Beyond volume, consider transit time (LCL can take longer due to consolidation/deconsolidation at hub ports), handling risk (FCL sees less handling since it isn’t opened in transit), and budget predictability. A good freight forwarder will help you calculate the actual breakeven point for your specific cargo type and trade lane rather than applying a blanket rule.
